Coinbase and Marqeta pair stablecoins with card payments

Marqeta and Coinbase announced a collaboration on October 16 to let Marqeta’s enterprise customers offer cards funded by users’ stablecoin balances. The companies say the arrangement combines Coinbase’s digital-asset infrastructure with Marqeta’s card issuing and payment processing. According to the Marqeta announcement distributed by Business Wire, the aim is to make stablecoin balances available for everyday card spending.

Which company handles each step?

Coinbase will hold the stablecoin balances and manage conversion between digital assets and fiat currency. Base, Coinbase’s blockchain, will provide the onchain infrastructure for settlement. Marqeta will issue the cards, process payments and manage the related bank and card-network relationships.

In practical terms, Coinbase supplies the asset and conversion services behind the card, while Marqeta connects the card program to payment networks and banks. The announcement does not describe the timing or exact sequence of conversion for an individual purchase, so those transaction details remain unspecified.

How will cardholders and businesses use the service?

Businesses will be able to issue stablecoin-backed cards and fund their programs around the clock, the companies said. Cardholders will be able to spend from a stablecoin balance at millions of merchants globally that accept cards. The setup links a digital balance to existing card acceptance: the stablecoin supports the spending balance, while the payment is processed through Marqeta’s card infrastructure.

The collaboration expands an existing relationship. Marqeta already issues crypto-backed cards for Coinbase; this announcement extends the arrangement to Marqeta’s enterprise customers, including crypto-native and traditional firms. The Block reported that the release gave no rollout date, fee details or initial list of supported stablecoins.

What remains to be specified?

The announcement describes the companies’ roles and the intended uses, but does not identify which stablecoins will be supported first or when businesses can launch cards. It also gives no pricing or cardholder fee information. Those details will determine how a business can adopt the service and what a cardholder’s spending options look like.

For now, the change is a new route for Marqeta customers to connect stablecoin balances to card spending, with Coinbase handling custody and conversion, Base providing settlement infrastructure, and Marqeta managing card issuance and processing. The next details to watch are the launch timing, supported stablecoins and commercial terms.
