What to Do When an Ethereum Swap Is Pending

A pending Ethereum swap is an unconfirmed transaction, not a stuck exchange; check its status, fee, and nonce before waiting, replacing, or canceling it.

What to Do When an Ethereum Swap Is Pending

If your Ethereum swap is pending, first check the transaction on a block explorer and confirm whether it is waiting for inclusion or has already failed. A swap is a transaction sent from your wallet to a smart contract; it is not complete until a block includes it and the contract executes it. Until then, the tokens may still appear in your wallet, but the transaction can affect what you send next.

What does pending mean for an Ethereum swap?

Pending means the transaction has been broadcast but has not yet been confirmed in a block. The wallet signs the transaction with an account nonce, a number that orders that account’s transactions, and includes a fee offer. Nodes share transactions they receive in their pending pools, and a block producer chooses transactions to include. The fee offer can affect that choice, but it does not guarantee a particular place or time.

The swap’s smart contract instructions—such as which tokens to exchange and the minimum amount the user will accept—are part of the transaction. They take effect only if the transaction is included and runs successfully. For a fuller explanation of how those steps fit together, see fermi swap. A pending label alone does not tell you whether the transaction is merely waiting, has been replaced, or will eventually fail.

How can I check why my Ethereum swap is pending?

Open the transaction details in your wallet or search its transaction hash on a block explorer. Check the status, nonce, fee settings, and whether the transaction appears on the network. If it is still pending, the explorer may show the fee offer, but it cannot promise when a block will include it. If the transaction is marked failed or reverted, it was included but the contract call did not complete as intended; the network fee for processing it may still be charged.

On Ethereum, a transaction’s fee settings can include a maximum fee and a priority fee. The maximum is the most the sender has authorized per unit of gas, while the priority fee is the part offered to the block producer. If the offered fee is unattractive compared with other transactions, inclusion may take longer. Network conditions change, and a wallet’s estimate can become outdated while the transaction waits.

Should I wait, speed up, or cancel a pending swap?

If the swap is still pending and you do not need to use that account urgently, waiting avoids sending a second transaction that could create confusion. If you want faster inclusion, your wallet may offer a speed-up option. It generally sends a replacement transaction with the same nonce and a higher fee, so the network can include either the original or replacement, but not both as separate transactions with that nonce.

A cancel option usually works by broadcasting a different transaction with the same nonce, often a simple transaction back to your own address. It is a race: if the original swap is included first, the cancellation cannot undo it. If the cancellation is included first, the original nonce is used and the swap can no longer be included. Wallets may set different fee increases for replacements, and a replacement can remain pending too.

Before choosing, use this short check:

  • Confirm the transaction hash and nonce belong to the swap you meant to send.
  • Check whether the transaction is pending, confirmed, or failed on the explorer.
  • Review the replacement fee shown by your wallet before speeding up or canceling.
  • Avoid sending another swap from the same account until you know how the pending nonce will resolve.

A pending swap is a transaction awaiting a block, not an exchange that can be refreshed. The next useful signal is its on-chain status: inclusion may complete the swap or record a failure, while a same-nonce replacement may take its place. Check that status before acting again.
